Iowa

Currently Iowa does not have a specification that allows the use of recycled asphalt shingles.  Iowa has conducted two demonstration projects using tear-off shingles.  The first demonstration was completed by the Iowa Department of Transportation in 1997, the most recent demonstration project was completed by the Waste Division of Scott County, Davenport Iowa, in October 2006 (see links below to the reports).  In addition, Central Construction and Demolition Recycling, Inc - Des Moines, IA has demonstrated the use of ground asphalt shingles in hot mix asphalt for recreational trail and parking lot construction (for more information contact rhosier@gecofiowa.com).  At this time, Iowa is actively researching the use of tear-off shingles with a number of partners.  To learn more about recycling  efforts contact the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
